Schoolhouse No. 1 opened in 1855 at Second and Spring Streets in downtown Los Angeles. The site has long passed into history. But at the turn of the century, the Los Angeles Unified School District has grown into a major public institution of 929 schools and centers. CADA
California Association of Directors Activities (CADA)

CADA, The California Association of Directors of Activities, is a 45 year old organization of more than 1500 individual members representing more than 70% of California's secondary schools. Membership in the organization is open to individiuals working with students in any phase of co-curricular activities.With it's goal of providing resources and services to members and member schools, CADA continues to work toward the public recognition of student activities as an important facet of a student's education.

Structurally, CADA, is broken down into 7 contiguous regions or areas, each directed by an Area coordinator serving on the State Board. In addition to the Area Coordinators, both officers and appointed directors round out the 17 member Board of Directors. This area structure provides both activity advisors and students with an extensive resource information network. This network is designed to assist new advisors, as well as, veterans in finding effective programs and successful activities to enhance their school student activities programs. Each area offers several excellent one day and weekend workshops.

The California League of Middle Schools is a non-profit membership association dedicated to improving the professional knowledge of middle level educators so that early adolescents may experience academic success and personal well-being. An inclusive organization, CLMS members are administrators, teachers, parents, professors, policymakers, and others interested in the achievement of middle level students.

CLMS hosts professional development conferences that: Tackle today's vital issues: standards, literacy, technology, testing, and the middle level ethic, provide classroom-tested content area teaching advice, encourage networking between job-alike educators, and feature sessions by education experts, policymakers, and veteran educators.

CLMS provides publications to members: The Middle Level News: a quarterly newsletter with statewide success stories, content area articles, state education policy updates, technology tips, and more, Middle Ground: the National Middle School Association journal that brings cutting-edge research, case studies, and innovative programs to educators in an easy-reading format, The CLMS web site, www.clms.net: a web-based meeting place for middle level educators, with job listings, resource links, and professional development information.
